All of these images I have chosen represent some form of the key words covered in our course material. I choose to illustrate the body, relationships, make-up, the "writer" and barbie. When I looked at the image of Demi Moore with absolutely have nothing on but paint. I love Demi Moore but I feel her image future perpetuates that idea of the perfect body. I like the way relationships where presented as well as the writer. I feel as though these where true forms of these words. And if you all have noticed the real "barbies" I have in my picture. These women are beautiful and look like they have no flaws but I'm sure you all recall the video of the dove evolution commercial how much a computer can change your appearance is amazing.
Next Unit
The Next Unit
Here is the first part of our next unit's assignment. Start this today:

Cover songs and remixes
I think it would be useful to think about our cover song assignment in terms of "cover songs," "appropriations" and "remixes." No one brought in any remixes, but they are another way of forwarding a text, almost like quoting in print, because it is in a context which is your own, but may contain the actual original instrumentations and voices from the song being remixed. Tehn cover songs are a different level of using someone's song because you reperform it, sometimes quite differently than the original, essentially taking someone's idea and making it your own, but citing it as a cover, so still giving attribution to the originator. This is like using the interllectual ideas of someone in your own writing, but citing that you got the idea from them, and possibly quoting or paraphrasing them. Another issue that came up in class discussion is appropriation, where an artist steals a song, or even kind of music/singing/instrumentation and makes it their own as if they are the originator. Here you can think of the influence blues had on rock and roll and some songs that were redone by white artists and that subsequently became associated with that artist and not the African American artist who actually was the originator.
Covering and remixing are in a way signs of respect, right? We love this musuc and we want to try it on, or we want to adapt it to our ideas and situations. Appropriations may also begin out of a love for a music, but it essentially steals. This is more akin to plaigiarism.
So when I think of covers, the first song I usually think of is the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" and the cover by Devo. So I'm including them, as well as a Britney Spears cover of it and an Aretha Franklin cover of it and a remix by DJ Pageheaven. Also is a version of it by the Residents, which came out just after the Stones' version, and became popular int he punk movement.
I wanted to include the Ed Sullivan show version, but I can't embed it. You can look it up on Youtube. Here's a 1997 live version:

just (dance) another one for fun...
hey guys!
so last week we had to pick two covers of the same song and say how they were different in meaning, style, lyrics, etc. after class, i realized that i should have picked this song. What do you guys think? One is Lady Gaga, and the other is a children's chorus (now famous due to oprah and perez hilton) for singing pop songs and keeping kids out of trouble. :)
Enjoy...

Happy End of Week
Hello everyone,
I plan to respond to all your blogs this weekend. I haven't forgotten you. Many of them are going very well so far. This weekend you are working on the biography of a classmate through interviewing someone. So you have a lot to write already and I'll only ask for a little post on your blog: Please write a bit about what you noticed in the movie of Bridget Jones versus the book. How did the director "forward" the book into the movie? Was it successful? Post your reactions/criticisms/favorite parts.
Something to consider you may also respond to (or respond to instead of the above): The novel used to be considered a "feminine" form of writing: silly in comparison to science or history or philosophy. Jane Austen first published Pride and Prejudice in 1813, and it was extremely popular. Helen Fielding based Bridget Jones's Diary on this novel, which Austen described in a letter to her sister as:
Here's one way I see:
By the way, this is Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy in the BBC miniseries of Pride and Prejudice.
Please remember that you should be responding int he comments section on your group members' blogs. Catch up on that this weekend, please.
Oh, I have a poem up on my personal class blog that you might find interesting too.

Jane Austen first published Pride and Prejudice in 1813, and it was extremely popular. Helen Fielding based Bridget Jones's Diary on this novel, which Austen described in a letter to her sister as:
The work is rather too light, and bright, and sparkling; it wants [i.e. needs] shade; it wants to be stretched out here and there with a long chapter of sense, if it could be had; if not, of solemn specious nonsense, about something unconnected with the story: an essay on writing, a critique on Walter Scott, or the history of Buonaparté, or anything that would form a contrast and bring the reader with increased delight to the playfulness and general epigrammatism of the general styleMy question to you, especially if you have seen or read Pride and Prejudice is how is this being "forwarded" into Bridget Jones's Diary (movie and book)? AND how is it all gendered? If we no longer think of the novel as inherently "feminine" or "specious nonsense," how did Fielding still accomplish the same feeling (if you think she did) in her novel?

Private Versus Public Writing
I feel that private writing is something you do for yourself and have the liberty to share it with whoever you wish. But I feel that with public writing is something that you want people to see and can be any way you it to be just as private writing. I think that personal and public writing have a the personality of the writer no matter what the piece is about.

Blogging notes
I've enjoyed your comments on public/personal/private writing. Here are some of your quotes:
I'd like to ask a new question which is related: What do you picture when you think of a "writer"?
Is it this?
This?
Or this?
Please note on your personal blogs, make sure you have enabled your comments in the "settings" tab. Also make sure you have made the blog available for our class members to view.
See you soon.
You can make your response to this posting part of your weekly post on your blog or a comment on the class blog. On the schedule, I have asked you to please compare the two articles you brought to class this week and any insights you have about them. Please do this on your personal blog.
When I write something public I write using bigger words and I spell check like crazy, because I want people to read my work and be impressed with my ideas and me.
secrets. personally, i LOVE a good secret. i share most anything with my best friend. but for some people, there are certain things that they cannot share with anyone.
PS- notice the lack of capital letters and formal sentences in this post? yeah...my own rules.
Now Bridget Jones's Diary was written to be read by lots of people so it is public.
I feel like when you write in something private you are more likely to truly share your feelings. If you're writing on something that's public, like this blog, I think it is a little harder to open up and share.
This is my very first post to this blog! (Key word: "this" - I have two other blogs...)
Private writing, on the other hand, would be writing that is solely for your own purposes. This differs from personal writing in that is not meant for anyone to read other than yourself; personal writing can be public writing.
This blog is personal and public. While the general public will view it, it is largely my opinion.
